Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Elite Highland Border Crossing
Drive time: approximately 5–6 hours
We hit the tarmac early, picking you up directly from Kigali International Airport (KGL) or your hotel in Kigali to beat the morning gridlock. Today is about clearing the distance to the western primate corridor. As we leave the central region, the urban bustle quickly transitions into the lush, rolling green tea plantations of the land of a thousand hills, sitting right under the shadow of the volcano mountain ranges. We’ll wind our way into the edge of the Bwindi impenetrable rain forest canopy by late afternoon.
• Road Time: Roughly 5 to 6 hours of steady, scenic driving.
• Pace: Unpack your gear, listen to the evening forest sounds, and rest up for tracking tomorrow.
Plunge deep into the UNESCO-listed ecosystem of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest alongside elite UWA rangers. For one profound, unforgettable hour, stand mere feet from a habituated family of mountain gorillas. In the afternoon, unwind with a complimentary deep-tissue leg massage at the lodge spa to soothe muscles after the jungle hike.
Bid farewell to the highlands and journey north through the scenic landscape of Queen Elizabeth National Park and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Arrive by late afternoon in the beautiful colonial town of Fort Portal, the gateway to the western kingdoms.
Drive north to Budongo Forest, an ancient mahogany canopy home to the most vibrant wild chimpanzee communities in East Africa. Track these fascinating primates on foot with expert researchers. In the afternoon, cross the Nile and arrive directly at our Pakwach base—welcome to Angara's home turf.
Awake on the northern bank (the Pakwach side)—the undisputed wildlife jewel of Murchison Falls. Track lions, leopards, giraffes, and elephants in your custom cruiser. In the afternoon, board our private luxury launch boat to glide up the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls, the world's most powerful waterfall.
Set out on an early-morning private boat expedition down the Nile toward the Albert Delta RAMSAR wetland site to track the rarest bird on earth: the prehistoric Shoebill Stork. In the afternoon, stand right at the cliff edge of the "Top of the Falls" to watch the entire Nile crash through a 7-meter gorge.
Depart Pakwach early. Stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track wild Southern White Rhinos on foot with expert rangers, triumphantly completing your "Big Five" checklist. Continue directly to Entebbe International Airport (EBB) for your late-evening outbound flight. End of Safari.
Critical Travel Notes •
Permit Availability: UWA only issues a limited number of gorilla permits per sector each day to protect the families. Because of this, budget slots fill up months in advance. If you have specific dates in mind, lock them in early so we can secure your passes before they sell out.
• Health Border Updates: You can leave the stress behind regarding entry paperwork—the Government of Uganda has officially abolished the mandatory Yellow Fever vaccination certificate requirement at border checkpoints. While health authorities still recommend it for general travel through East Africa, you no longer need to upload or verify a card to get your e-visa processed.
Use the custom planner to share your ideas. Our local Pakwach-based guides typically reply with a custom, direct-operated itinerary draft within 12 hours.
